Excerpt from On the Beauties, Harmonies, and Sublimities of Nature, Vol. 3 of 3: With Notes, Commentaries, and Illustrations; And Occasional Remarks on the Laws, Customs, Habits, and Manners, of Various Nations
Numerous are the resemblances, we mentally draw, between those spots, which fascinate us, as we travel on, and those that we have heard described, or seen delineated. In a tour, which La Rochefort made in the summer of among the most delightful scenes, of which this island can boast, niany were the ideal resemblances, he fancied. This river reminded him of the Arno, or the Brenta this mountain appeared to exhibit all the beauties of the Pyrenees, or the Apennines; that wood recalled to his memory the groves, which decorate the classic shores of the Po and the Mincio this hamlet resembled that, of which Pliny gives so beautiful a description; and that villa Scipio's seat on the banks of the Tiber.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the omnipresent themes of beauty, harmony, and the sublime within nature and the arts. The author considers nature the ultimate benchmark by which art should be measured, with sublime natural wonders like the Colosseum and the Grand Canyon inspiring awe-inspiring masterpieces of architecture like St Peter's Basilica and the Houses of Parliament. The author explores how our perceptions of beauty and sublimity are shaped by memory, experience, cultural and historic associations, and our collective human imagination. The book covers a wide range of examples from the Louvre to Stonehenge, from the paintings of Michelangelo to the music of Beethoven, arguing that we can only understand and appreciate the sublime by examining it alongside the beautiful, the harmonious, and the picturesque.
