Excerpt from The Farmer's Own Book of Intellectual and Moral Improvement
The writer of the following pages, as some of his readers might, perhaps, discover without this confession, is not a farmer. But he is no stran ger to the duties and labors of practical husband ry. He is the son of a farmer, and the early years of his life were spent in the healthful and honorable employment of tilling the ground. The labors of the plough and the hoe, of planting and of gathering the harvest, have not faded from his memory. And one of the pleasures which he eu ticipates in composing the following pages, is the reviving in his mind of scenes and duties of by gone days. He hopes, also, that his remarks will not be altogether unprofitable or uninteresting to the class for which they are designed. With this class his first associations were formed - among them, are many of his-friends and relatives - and to them he is bound both by affection and principle.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the profound privileges and unique temptations faced by Christian farmers. The author, a former farmer, understands the challenges of relying on nature's rhythms for sustenance and success. Themes of morality connect farming to oneās faith, with chapters considering the calmness and stability of rural life, the opportunities for patience and courage found in farming, and the responsibility toward animals and the environment. The author posits that farmers are natural defenders of their nation, but also that common sense is a virtue enhanced by the practical, independent nature of farm work. The book examines how the rhythms of the natural world invite contemplation and devotion and highlights the abundant biblical imagery drawn from agriculture to illustrate God's dealings with humanity. By examining both the unique boons and temptations of the Christian farmer, this book offers a rich exploration of faith, nature, and the human experience.
