Excerpt from The Development of Character: A Practical Creed
The following brief chapters were written in the belief, that the cardinal principles upon which a good character is based are susceptible of absolute demon stration; and the attempt has been made to present these demonstrations as nearly as possible in the terse, direct manner in which a geometrical proposition is proved, without any effort toward oratory or epigram. Technical terms have been avoided, and it is hoped that the subject has been presented in language that will enable every candid mind to follow the argument and perceive the correctness of the conclusions. The object sought is not mere academic assent to a series of propositions, but a. Practical adoption of the prin ciples set forth in daily life and in the formation Of character.

This book explores the nature of happiness and the principles that govern it, in the process, defining the cardinal principles upon which a good character is based. The author argues that character is a fixed inclination towards certain courses of conduct, resulting from constant obedience to moral principles prescribing such conduct, and that a moral principle is a conviction that a certain kind of conduct ought to be invariably pursued. By examining the animal kingdom, the author shows that the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain are the universal motives for action in all sentient creatures. The author then argues that the same universal goal, happiness, prompts the social as well as the self-regarding actions of humans and animals. Delving into human conduct, the author posits that all conduct which makes for perfect health should be followed, and the contrary avoided, establishing health as the source of the greatest physical pleasure. However, the author goes on to argue that physical pleasure is outweighed by mental or spiritual pleasures, and sets out to show how sympathy is a far more important source of happiness than physical health, prompting us to care for the well -being of others as well as ourselves. Kindness and sacrifice are seen as natural corollaries of sympathy, with the latter tending to promote perfect physical health in those around us and increasing our ability to sympathize more and more nearly perfectly with one another. The author then posits that love is the most perfect form of mutual sympathy and therefore the source of the greatest possible happiness. Love is described as a means to the attainment of the greatest happiness of which our nature is capable, and that it is the most important virtue in the whole development of character. The author details how the principles set forth in the book apply to the family, the nation, and the race, and concludes by asserting that the pursuit of happiness is the legitimate and necessary goal of human action, and that the development of character is a search for the means of attaining happiness.
