Excerpt from The Nature of Ore Deposits, Vol. 2 of 2
The quicksilver ores, therefore, in the most important part of the Idria mines, have impregnated extensive masses of completely disintegrated rock, and have more or less saturated either highly porous or specially bitu minous beds which acted as filters. The real channels of supply are not revealed. As the dislocations of the region are of Tertiary (probably Eocene) age it follows that the impregnation with quicksilver compounds is of very youthful age.

This book examines different types of ore deposits which have formed within the earth and been brought to the surface through volcanic activity and tectonic shifts. The author categorizes known ore deposits into types based on their formation processes. He presents a genetic classification of ore deposits that incorporates both the scientific principles developed since the beginning of scientific geology and the practical experience of miners throughout geologic time. He discusses different examples of mineral veins such as gold, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc veins found in different countries around the globe. The author also discusses deposits formed by the action of water and describes features such as the gossan found on the surface of ore veins. This book is essential reading for geologists and mining engineers interested in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the formation and occurrence of ore deposits.
