Excerpt from Iron City
I have endeavored to depict the unspiritual side of American life in the hope that when the details of the picture are assembled we shall see how far we have departed from our great tradition, and how at vari ance we are to our unconscious life.

Here's an interesting item. The press arm of the college now republishing this 1919 novel once fired Hedges for writing the book, which cataloged the social ills of the school and the town of Beloit. After his literary and teaching career ended, Hedges made a name for himself as a labor representative.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a historical account of an American city in the early 20th century, from the perspective of John Cosmus, a young man who arrives in this unnamed industrial town to take up a teaching position at Crandon Hill College. The book explores the tensions between the city's conservative past and its rapidly changing present, as immigrants from all over the world flock to work in the city's factories. The author examines the impact of industrialization and urbanization on the city's social and cultural life, and on the individuals who live there. The book offers a nuanced and thought-provoking look at the challenges and opportunities faced by American society as it entered the 20th century and remains relevant today as the country grapples with similar issues of immigration, inequality, and social change.
