Excerpt from The Pentateuch and Book of Joshua: Critically Examined
'my remembrance of the friendly intercourse, which I have enjoyed with you in former days, would be enough to assure me that you will excuse my troubling you on the present occasion, were I not also certain that, on far higher grounds, you will gladly lend what aid you can to a brother in distress, and in very great need Of advice and assistance, such as few are better able to give than yourself. You will easily understand that, in this distant colony, I am far removed from the possibility of converse with those, who would be capable of appreciating my difficulties, and helping me with friendly sympathy and counsel, I have many friends in England but there are few, to whom I would look more readily than to yourself, for the help which I need, from regard both to your public position and private character and you have given evidence, moreover, in your published works, of that extensive reading and sound judg.

John William Colenso was consecrated the first Bishop of Natal on 30th November 1853 and died at Bishopstowe in 1883. The publication of this Commentary on Romans in 1861 sparked a controversy over the legitimate lengths to which the Church could go in accommodating itself to African culture, with major consequences for church and society in South Africa. This remarkable book is now made available again in the hope that Colenso's courageous engagement with African culture may resonate with and inspire contemporary work on enculturation of the gospel.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the historical credibility of the Pentateuch and the Book of Joshua, arguing that these texts cannot be regarded as historically true. The Pentateuch is a collection of five books attributed to Moses, and it forms the foundation of the Jewish and Christian faiths. The Book of Joshua is a continuation of the Pentateuch. The texts contain many stories and laws that have been the subject of much debate and controversy. The author of this book, a Bishop of the Church of England, has studied the Pentateuch and the Book of Joshua in depth, and he argues that there is no historical evidence to support the claim that these texts are accurate accounts of events that actually happened. He also argues that the texts contain many contradictions and inconsistencies, and that they reflect the beliefs and values of the ancient Israelites, rather than the actual history of the Israelites. This book is a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate about the historical accuracy of the Bible, and it will be of interest to anyone who is interested in the history of religion or in the relationship between faith and reason.
