Excerpt from Vain Fortune
The union of the texts was no doubt accomplished by Madam Couperus, without the alteration of a sen tence but no such accomplished editing is possible to me; I am a victim to the disease of rewriting, and the inclusion of the hundred or more pages of new matter written for the American edition led me into a third revision of the story. But no more than in the second has the skeleton, or the attitude of the skeleton been altered in this third version, only flesh and muscle have been added, and, I think, a little life.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the world of late 19th-century London, exploring the struggles and aspirations of artists navigating a society on the cusp of change. The narrative centres on a playwright, a painter turned wordsmith, grappling with the challenges of creative expression and financial instability. As he strives to complete his latest masterpiece, he encounters a cast of characters who embody the artistic spirit of the time ââ â a young actress yearning for a breakthrough role, a pavement artist with dreams of recognition, and a community of fellow artists seeking solace and inspiration in shared experiences. Through their intertwined stories, the author examines themes of artistic ambition, societal expectations, and the precarious nature of success in a rapidly evolving world. The book contrasts the refined aspirations of the artistic class with the harsh realities of poverty and social marginalization, shedding light on the tensions between creative ideals and the demands of everyday life. As the protagonist confronts personal and professional setbacks, he is forced to question his place in society and the true value of his artistic pursuits. This book offers a poignant reflection on the enduring challenges faced by artists throughout history, reminding us that the pursuit of creative fulfilment often comes at a significant cost.
