Synopsis
This book, written around the turn of the 20th century, examines the complex intertwining of moral and ethical challenges posed by the presence of a mixed-race population of African descent in the United States. The author rejects the views of the time that elevated whites and denigrated blacks, synthesizing instead a balanced perspective, carefully avoiding the incendiary rhetoric that dominated much of the discourse on race. Unlike the antislavery movement, the author decried the harms done to the black community by the actions of white philanthropists and the government, who often sought to help but ended up creating situations that further entrenched immoral behavior.
