Excerpt from Bigamy and Polygamy: Review of the Opinion of the Supreme Court of the United States, Rendered at the October Term, 1878, in the Case of George Reynolds, Plaintiff in Error Vs the United States, Defendent in Error
The question before the court, it is reported, was argued mainly upon the proposition that the statute of 1862, is adverse to the principles of religious liberty as laid down in the following words, in the first constitutional amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibit ing the free exercise thereof. Whether or not there is a relig ious question involved in the issue is immaterial to this inquiry.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an in-depth examination of the Supreme Court of the United States' 1879 ruling on polygamy in the case of George Reynolds, a practicing Mormon, against the United States government. This ruling, originating in the societal and religious tensions of the time, institutionalized a legal assault on the religious group, depriving individuals of their rights while establishing a dangerous precedent for government intrusion into personal and family life. The author goes beyond this case to explore the foundational principles of human and religious freedom and the nature of government's role and authority within a free society, making this book a thought-provoking read for anyone interested in the intersection of law, history, and human rights in the United States.
