Synopsis

Explore the scope of the world’s coal resources in an early 20th‑century synthesis.

This authoritative volume presents the state of knowledge as of 1913, with detailed country‑by‑country assessments and technical data drawn from international surveys and mining experts.

The book offers a structured, data‑driven look at coal deposits around the globe, including regional field descriptions, seam counts, thicknesses, and preliminary reserve estimates. It captures the era’s method for classifying and reporting coal resources, and it situates coal in the larger story of industrial development and energy supply.
  • Country surveys with maps and measured seam data, showing how reserves were estimated in 1910s practice.
  • Classifications that distinguish actual, probable, and possible reserves used by geologists of the time.
  • Historical context on mining methods, production patterns, and early geological methods for assessing coal fields.
Ideal for readers of historical geology, mining history, and energy economics, this edition provides a window into how scholars compiled global coal statistics a century ago and the practical details used to forecast supply.
