These simple ratios of I to 2 and 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 were used to fix the four chief notes of every octave, two near the middle and one at either end. And generally the ratio of 8 to 9, which is involved in those of 2 to 3 and 3 to 4, was used to fix the four remaining notes.
