Excerpt from First Latin Verse Book
These three rules will enable you to determine the quantity of many syllables: thus, in qginnt, you can tell the quantity of the first and last syllables by rule 2, and of the third syllable by rule 1. But no rule can be given by which you can tell that the u of fdgio is short. When a vowel is long or short by nature, its quantity is marked in the Vocabulary 3 but when it is long or short by position (according to the first two rules given above) it is not marked. On the page before the Vocabulary you will find some rules which will help you in determining the quantity Of a final syllable. If these rules leave you in doubt you must consult the Primer.
