Born in New York City in 1823, Colfax moved to Indiana as a child and began his political career after establishing a weekly journal at the age of 22. After serving as a delegate to the 1848 National Whig Convention and as a member of the Indiana State Senate, Colfax was elected to the United States Congress in 1854 as a Free Soil Democrat. As a member of the House of Representatives, Colfax played a key role in the election of Nathaniel P. Banks as Speaker of the House in 1856, and later served as Speaker of the House from 1863 to 1869. The author argues that Colfax's political career was marked by his commitment to the Republican Party and its principles, his belief in the importance of education and informed decision-making, and his dedication to the cause of abolition and racial equality.
