The design of this little work is to show - rather than prove - that William Shakspere, the actor, despite what has been written of late years to the contrary, and not Francis Bacon, the statesman, was the man who composed the great English dramas.

But having met with persons Of all classes and' students Of all grades who fancy that Bacon was the real author, it is scarcely necessary to apologise for attempting to show - rather than assert - that the idea is preposterous.
