This book traces the history and techniques of engraving, from its origins in ancient times to the 15th century. The author also explores the debate over whether the invention of engraving is more closely linked to the production of playing cards or religious imagery. Of particular interest is the discussion of the "Tarocchi of Mantegna," a series of 50 emblematic figures with their attributes, which is considered one of the earliest and most important examples of engraving on copper.
