Synopsis

This book is a collection of essays written by an Anglican vicar in Victorian Britain. Beginning with subjects of clerical life and its trials, the author goes on to focus on the plight of the rural poor and the problems of social injustice. In one essay, the author seeks to overturn the common belief that clerical life is synonymous with ease and comfort, and goes to great lengths to describe the financial costs of the position that extend beyond the tithe and include payments for curate support, land tax, income tax, insurance, and mortgage fees. Another essay takes aim at the modern (for the time) concept of the social safety net, which the author argues is having a demoralizing effect on the rural poor. Throughout, the author frames their arguments with historical context and grounds them in Christian theology. An insightful and provocative read that is as relevant today as it was 140 years ago.
