Whitman's criticism of rhyme is Significant. The argument that rhyme produces a comic effect is one often used against it by partisans of the vers libre. The verslibristes themselves started by weakening the rhyme-endings, and paying less attention to this feature of the verse, which had been so important for the Parnassians'.
