But even before the war, there had been for many years a gradual increase of unrest among the workers of all civilized nations. This was due to a variety of causes, some of which date back to the great French Revolution.
That mighty upheaval was brought about by the intellectual movement} of the eighteenth century which had slowly but surely undermined the faith of the masses of the people in revealed religion and in the divine right of kings and nobles. This pro cess had been going on for several generations un til it had completely sapped the foundations of the old feudal system and it needed only a spark to cause its overthrow.
