In the case of two or three of the Presidents, the selections from their writings are necessarily brief and unsatisfactory but for the rest, more abundant mate rial has enabled us to present their opinions with sufficient fulness.
It is proper to state that for the conversations of General Grant, we are indebted to a work of much interest and value Around the World with General Grant in 187 7 - 1879, by john R. Young. J. C.
