When I began to compile some of the following tales, my intention was to have them printed for private circulation among my relatives and friends. I have, however, been persuaded by some of my friends to offer them to the public; otherwise I should not have ventured to do so. With the exception of the first tale, and one or two of the others, the rest all relate to incidents which came under my own observation during a lifetime of over fourscore years. I can only hope that you may be able to find some of these tales of some little interest; and if this little book results in enabling you to "while away the time" now and then, and to get some little amusement therefrom, I shall be satisfied, and pleased that I accepted my friends' advice to get it published. They are simple tales mostly such as are told in ordinary after dinner chit-chats round the fire, over a good cigar and a glass of good wine, when young men tell tales of present-day happenings to be capped by older men's tales of the "good old times."
