Synopsis

This book explores the subject of money and its role in society through an examination of the Bank of England's restriction from paying their notes in specie by Act of Parliament in 1797. The author believed that the resulting depreciation of paper would lead to a national bankruptcy, and he sought to impress this upon both policymakers and the public. The author argues that because the banknotes were not exchangeable for gold at the Bank of England, the market price for gold increased relative to its mint price, while the prices of all other goods followed suit. The author then traces the broader historical trends that led to this situation and explains why the arguments most commonly advanced in Parliament against his views are flawed. The argument put forth in this book helped define the parameters of the debate over monetary policy that would continue for many more years.
