Excerpt from Ancient Indian Historical Tradition
The views about ancient India now held by scholars are based upon an examination of the Veda and Vedic literature, to the neglect of Puranic and epic tradition; that is, ancient Indian history has been fashioned out of compositions, which are purely religious and priestly, which notoriously do not deal with history, and which totally lack the historical sense. The extraordinary nature of such history may be perceived, if it were suggested that European history should be constructed merely out of theological literature. What would raise a smile if applied to Europe has been soberly accepted when applied to India. This contrast is full justification for a consideration of what historical tradition has to tell us, and the results obtained from an examination of Puranic and epic tradition as well as of the Rigveda and Vedic literature are set out in the following pages.

This book takes a unique approach to ancient Indian history, challenging the traditional reliance on Vedic texts and instead placing significant weight on the Puranas and epics. The author argues that while the Vedas provide invaluable insight into religious practices and beliefs, they lack the historical sense to offer a complete picture of ancient India's political and social development. The book delves into the rich tapestry of ancient Indian tradition, exploring the roles of kings and rishis (saints) in shaping society. The author meticulously examines dynastic genealogies, heroic tales, and the preservation of oral traditions by the "sutas," or bards. The book meticulously traces the development of the Puranas and their relationship to the Vedas, highlighting the vital role of the "sutas" in recording and transmitting historical knowledge. The book's exploration of ancient Indian tradition offers a fresh perspective on the interplay between political power, religious belief, and cultural exchange in ancient India. It reveals a complex and dynamic society that was far richer and more nuanced than previously understood. Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
