Excerpt from The Expansion of England: Two Courses of Lectures
In preparing these lectures for the press I have been much indebted to Professor Cowell, Who was good enough to take an interest in that part of theni Which relates to India, and to Mr. Cunningham, the author of that most interesting book, The Growth of English Industry.

First published in 1883, The Expansion of England examines the growth of the British Empire, which Seeley memorably says was acquired 'in a fit of absence of mind'. He believed that to keep its position of world influence, historical analysis must be the basis of present and future decisions.
SIR JOHN ROBERT SEELEY (1834-1895) was Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and an honorary member of Historical Society of Massachusetts. He is also the author of Ecce Homo.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the expansion of England throughout the eighteenth century, arguing that this period was far more momentous than is commonly understood. The author contends that the period was marked by a series of major wars, particularly against France, which were fundamentally about competing claims to territories in the New World. He further argues that these conflicts were not merely accidental, but were driven by a deeper rivalry between the two nations for global dominance. The author, writing at a time when England had already lost its first major colonial empire, examines the question of whether or not England will be able to maintain its second empire in the face of a rapidly growing population in its overseas territories. By drawing on a deep knowledge of historical detail, this book offers a compelling new perspective on a crucial and often overlooked period of English history.
