Synopsis
This book studies the relationships between Progressive, Labor, and Socialist parties, allocating space to the great services they're destined to render and their limitations. At the time of writing, the author acknowledges their popularity and the universal positive coverage of their claims. However, the author's unique perspective allows them to bring to light criticisms of these movements that are typically absent from public discourse, exploring the limitations that are usually neglected or ignored. The author's political philosophy is clearly stated: in any inevitable conflict between a lower and higher social group, any truly progressive person must side with the lower group. The ruling social group will primarily utilize its power for its own purposes and is, therefore, an exploiting group until it's no longer possible to rule and exploit. The genuine progressive must, consequently, view all social questions from the standpoint of the lower half of the population, which comprises several elements but primarily consists of unskilled labor and is often allied with clerical labor, poorer professionals, and the aristocracy of labor. An individual who desires maximum social progress will, therefore, side with the laboring masses over the aristocracy of labor and with the aristocracy of labor over small capitalists and, finally, with progressives over conservatives, despite the fact that the latter might appear to represent nothing more than the interests of small capitalists against large. The author acknowledges the unpopularity of this position but argues that not only is it increasingly followed by many people, but that the unskilled, even when organized and at war with the skilled, still vote for the latter's Labor Parties. The author's key argument is that Socialist and Labor Parties, the world over, support radicals and progressives in every struggle against conservatives and that the number of people following this policy will increase substantially as our political machinery allows a full and free expression of opinion. About the Author
William English Walling (1877-1936) was a social reform activist who helped found the National women's Trade Union League in 1903 and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1909. He authored several influential works, including Socialism as it Is: A Survey of the World-Wide Revolutionary Movement. The Larger Aspects of Socialism. Progressivism and After, and The Socialists and the War.
