Excerpt from The Preaching of the Cross, Vol. 1
Priests. The external incidents Of the time are but two - the release by our Lord Of the woman taken in adultery, and His healing the man born blind.
St. John stops abruptly at the end of the last discourse of this time which he relates, and proceeds on at once, towards the end of his tenth chapter, to tell us of another visit Of our Lord to Jerusalem in the depth of winter, for the Feast of the Dedication. For it is his plan to confine himself, in this part of his work, to incidents which occurred either in Jerusalem itself, or in the immediate neighbourhood of the city. St. Luke had already taken up, as his work, the narrative of what passed, during these last few months of our Lord's teaching, in Judaea itself, leaving alone the incidents in or near Jerusalem before the Passion. These two Evangelists thus complete each the other. In fact, St. John's chapters might simply be inserted, in two or three large fragments, into the narrative of St. Luke.
