Septima M. Collis, a Southern woman who defied societal norms to marry a Northerner, defied them yet again by serving the Union as a volunteer nurse and chronicler. Her vivid recollections paint a vivid and often harrowing picture of life amidst the hardships of winter camp, exhilarating battlefield victories, and the aftermath of devastating battles. Brimming with personal encounters with renowned figures like General Meade, Grant, Hancock, and Lincoln himself, this book not only sheds light on military strategy and the human toll of war but also provides a unique perspective on the complex social and political dynamics of the era. Through Collis's engaging prose, readers gain a nuanced understanding of the complexities of the Civil War while being captivated by the author's own journey of self-discovery and unwavering spirit.
