Excerpt from The Schleswig-Holstein War, Vol. 1 of 2
The letters of which these volumes are mainly composed were written, all of them, on the spur of the moment, many of them under circumstances of extreme haste and difficulty. In revising them, however, I have thought it best to leave them much as I originally wrote them, omitting only such portions as had, if any, solely a passing interest. I trust that these pages, faulty as they are in many ways, will be found to represent fairly the momentous struggle which it was my lot to witness.

The author, a correspondent for the *Daily Telegraph*, provides a unique perspective on the war from within the heart of the Duchies, chronicling his personal experiences and observations. The book delves into the complex political and nationalistic tensions that fueled the conflict. The author examines the historical roots of the dispute, exploring the centuries-old relationship between Schleswig and Holstein and their respective ties to Denmark and Germany. He meticulously details the competing claims to the Duchies' sovereignty, highlighting the role of dynastic rivalries and shifting alliances in the lead-up to the war. Through vivid anecdotes and insightful analysis, the author offers a poignant portrayal of the human cost of war. He vividly describes the hardships faced by ordinary people caught in the crossfire, from the freezing winter conditions to the constant threat of conflict. He also explores the prevailing sentiments toward the war within the Duchies, contrasting the fervent nationalism of the German population with the resilience of the Danes facing overwhelming odds. This book offers a valuable window into a pivotal conflict in European history, revealing the complexities of national identity and the devastating consequences of war.
