I had been a frequent visitor at their home for some months previous to this, paying my atten tions to Miss Edith, the youngest of the three sisters. She and I had often talked of the is sues of the war. She was extremely loyal to the South, and believed, as (lid thousands of other Southern people, the Yankees would not fight; that they were an inferior and cowardly race, and that one Southern man was more than equal to five of them. She used all the persuasive powers at her command to influence me to volun teer in the Confederate army, but I always met her arguments with my side of the question, and her influe cc proved of no avail.'
