Francis Leopold Ragotzy, or, perhaps, more properly speaking, Rakoczy, a stepson of Tiiko'ly, was, when a mere youth, mixed up in a conspiracy against the constitution of the realm, and for the purpose of enforcing the secession from Austria of Transylv ania and all the Hungarian countries. Ragotzy found his earliest champions among the robbers, Ci koschs, and refractory peasants but after some time his force was recruited by the ad hesion of several Magyars of birth and station. Among them were the Counts Alexander Karoly, Nikolaus Bercsenv, and Forgatsch. These rebel hordes were called Kuruzzen (curmmes), and their raids, accompanied as they were by waste and havoc, seemed to be long to the darker ages for they robbed.
