Excerpt from The Impending Fate of Trinity College, Dublin, Considered
That the main cause of the enormous power andinfluence which the Roman Catholic priesthood has unquestionably wielded in Ireland, for the last forty years, was the formerly Established Church, I enter tain no doubt whatever. But to understand the reason for this, we must extend our views beyond this country. The mere fact that a large majority of the Irish peasantry are Roman Catholics would never, of itself, have given their spiritual guides so great and so lasting influence over the Imperial Legislature. N 0, this influence has had a different source it is simply to be ascribed to the steady, un compromising, unvarying moral support of the great Liberal party in England and Scotland - a support which was indirectly brought about by the ill-starred institution which has so lately passed away.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the heated debate surrounding university education in Ireland during a time of significant social and political change. The author, an impartial observer, examines the clash between the Irish Catholic Church and the Protestant establishment over control of Trinity College, Dublin. Set against the backdrop of the recently disestablished Irish Church, the book delves into the arguments for and against denominational and secular education. The author analyzes the power dynamics between the Catholic hierarchy and the Liberal government, highlighting the shift in public opinion toward equality for Catholics. Through historical context and insightful commentary, the book uncovers the underlying tensions between religious dogma and academic freedom. It challenges the notion that religious belief should dictate educational policy, advocating instead for a system that promotes intellectual inquiry and mutual respect. This book offers a valuable perspective on the ongoing debate over the role of religion in higher education, making it a compelling read for anyone interested in Irish history, education policy, or the intersection of faith and society.
