Synopsis

Excerpt from The Life of Rev. John Murray: Late Minister of the Reconciliation, and Senior Pastor of the Universalists, Congregated in Boston

The original edition of the following work appeared in 8vo, in the year 1816. The interest of the work secured for it a rapid sale, and demanded frequent republication. Several editions appeared before 1833, in which year Rev. Thomas Whittemore reproduced it, with annotations and additions, in letter-press, and a stereotype edition was also published, under the editorial care of Rev. L. S. Everett. The former edition was soon exhausted the latter continued to supply a steady demand until within a few years, when by a mistaken, perhaps fortunate, judgment, the plates were broken up, sold as old type-metal, and cast into the melting-pot. Both of the last-named editions were com~ pactly printed to secure cheapness. It is peculiarly meet that an edition worthy of the subject should now appear on the eve of the centenary of American Universalism, which dates historically from the appearance of the provi dential man the story of whose life is here related.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This gripping spiritual autobiography details the life of Rev. John Murray, an influential figure in the spread of Universalism in America. Born in the mid-18th century, Murray recounts his challenging childhood marked by poverty and strict religious upbringing. His early experiences with Calvinism instilled a deep-seated fear of damnation, which haunted him throughout his youth. As a young man, Murray became involved with the Methodist movement, drawn to its emotional fervor and emphasis on personal experience. However, his growing doubts about some of their doctrines led him to question his own salvation. It was during this period that he began to develop his own unique theological views, which emphasized universal love and the ultimate salvation of all souls. Despite opposition from both Calvinists and Methodists, Murray boldly preached his message of hope and reconciliation. His travels throughout the United States helped establish Universalism as a growing religious movement. Murray's autobiography offers a fascinating glimpse into the religious landscape of America during a time of great religious revival. It sheds light on the challenges faced by religious outsiders and the power of belief in shaping one's life.
