Excerpt from The Life of Arthur Duke of Wellington
Wellesley being consulted as to the measures best adapted to restrain or repel the invasion, says, The art of crossing rivers is now so well understood, and has been so frequently practised, and so invariably, I believe, with success in the late wars of Europe, that we cannot hope to defend the Indus as a bar rier. It is true that the enemy will not be in possession of the resources and means which they could apply to such an operation on a river in Italy or in Germany, but they will experience no want of such resources as that country will afford; and I have made as good a bridge with the basket-boats (which are described in Caesar, and are in use all over India, the materials for which are to be found everywhere), as I could have made of the best pontoons.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book gives a detailed account of the fascinating life of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington. A renowned military leader, he was born in 1769 to an aristocratic Irish family and went on to attend Eton College. The author suggests that Wellesley was not an exceptional student and preferred solitude to socializing. Despite his initial struggles, he was appointed to an ensigncy in the 73rd Regiment of foot at the age of 18. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant-colonel by 1796. Wellesley's career as a military commander began in earnest in 1794 when he was dispatched to the Netherlands as part of an expeditionary force. He first saw action in the lines covering Antwerp, and in 1795, he was engaged in a serious affair with the French army. The book provides an insightful exploration of Wellesley's military tactics and strategies, as well as his role in some of the most significant battles of the Napoleonic Wars, including Assaye, Argaum, Salamanca, and Waterloo. Wellesley's achievements extended beyond the battlefield. He served as Chief Secretary for Ireland and was appointed the first Duke of Wellington in 1814. This book offers a comprehensive examination of Wellesley's life and the enduring impact of his military and political contributions.
