Excerpt from Science and War: The Rede Lecture 1919
I am reminding you of these things not as bearing upon the choice that as a nation we made in entering into the conflict. Not all these disastrous couse quences can make us regret that choice. Gigantic as must evidently be the cost it was not for us to count it. From the first it was clear that the future of the whole world was at stake, that the con flict was between World Dominion and Liberty and the memory of our past and the hopes of our future combined to make our path clear. But my object is not to dwell on these matters but to impress upon you that, the choice once made, the issue became one of such surpassing importance that it inevitably called into action all the powers, known or latent, of those engaged in the struggle.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is not just about the history of warfare, but an exploration of the impact of scientific progress on the art of battle. The author examines the epoch-making shifts brought about by technological breakthroughs between the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the cataclysmic end to the Great War in 1918. It provides an engaging overview of how science-based advancements, such as the invention of smokeless powder and the internal combustion engine, have transformed weaponry and tactics. It also provides an in-depth analysis of the complex and often paradoxical relationship between warfare and scientific innovation, questioning whether scientific progress inevitably leads to increased human suffering. An unforgettable and comprehensive study, this book offers a sobering, yet thought-provoking vantage point on the nature of war and the double-edged sword of scientific advancement.
