Excerpt from Early Reviews of English Poets
Literary journals in England were, however, not a native development, but were copied, like the fashions and artistic norms of that period, from the French. The famous and long-lived Journal des Scavam was begun at Paris in 1665 by M. Denis de Sallo, who has been called, since the time of Voltaire, the inventor of literary journals. In 1684 Pierre Bayle began at Amster dam the publication of Nouvelles de la République des Lettres, which continued under various hands until 1718.

This book explores the history of criticisms directed at some of the most renowned works of English literature, offering a delightful and instructive collection of literary commentary. The author begins with a brief history of English critical journals, providing context for the often vicious and personal attacks that many famous authors have faced over the years. The book delves into the motivations behind these criticisms, ranging from simple bias and jealousy to genuine differences in taste and artistic judgment. The author also examines the impact of these criticisms on the works themselves, and on the reputations of their creators, and explores the ways in which the critical landscape has evolved over time. Overall, this book offers a unique and entertaining perspective on the often fraught relationship between authors, critics, and the reading public.
