This book provides a first-hand account from a war correspondent of life and death on the front lines of World War I, exploring the everyday realities and challenges faced by those amidst the Great War. The author's journey takes him to various sectors of the conflict, including the Aisne, Soissons, Arras and Notre Dame de Lorette to name but a few, where we are exposed to the horrors of war that the author witnessed firsthand. At a time when the Western Front had ground to a halt in the face of brutal trench warfare and a stalemate of attrition, the author takes us on a journey through a series of snapshots of key moments in the war. As he himself admits, the author was not always able to get to the heart of the fighting, with the authorities seeking to control press reporting of events and restrict access to the most dangerous sectors of the front. Yet in spite of these restraints, the author has created a vivid and compelling account of life during the First World War, revealing the horrors of trench warfare in frank and harrowing detail. This book is a powerful and moving account of an extraordinary period in history from the perspective of one of those sent to witness it.
