Synopsis

Excerpt from A Theology for the Social Gospel

Of my qualifications for this subject I have reason to think modestly, for I am not a doctrinal theologian either by professional training or by personal habits of mind. Professional duty and intellectual liking have made me a teacher of Church History, and the events of my life, interpreted by my religious experiences, have laid the social problems on my mind. On the other hand, it may be that the necessity of approaching systematic theology from the outside may be of real advantage. Theology has often received its most fruitful impulses when secu lar life and movements have set it new problems.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the relationship between theology and the social gospel, and encourages the expansion of theological systems to provide a solid intellectual foundation for social gospel movements. The crises and challenges currently facing modern society necessitate such an expansion. The author argues that theological insights, particularly on repentance for collective sins and redemption for those sins, need to be expanded and refreshed in order to meet the needs of the present day. That said, this book is not intended to dismantle traditional theology, but rather to enrich and deepen it. The author suggests that this expansion and deepening will act as a revitalizing force for theology as a discipline, as it would engage more directly with urgent ethical problems and encourage greater critical thinking within the field. Ultimately, this broadening of theology will help make it more relevant and accessible to laypeople, as it will connect religious doctrine and ethical action more closely. It will also help restore the prophetic spirit in the exponents of doctrinal theology, encouraging them to seek boldness and authority from the living spirit of God.
