Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a captivating journey through the life and times of a woman born into a Scottish family with a rich history. The author recounts her childhood spent amidst the grandeur of Dunnichen House, the family estate in Forfarshire, and Skibo Castle in Sutherland. Her vivid descriptions transport readers to a bygone era, painting a picture of Scottish society in the 19th century, particularly the stark contrasts between the lives of the landed gentry and those of their poorer Highland neighbors. The author's recollections are infused with a keen eye for detail, capturing the distinctive customs, traditions, and personalities that shaped her world. Readers will be enthralled by her tales of memorable characters: from the kindly Dr. John Reid who introduced her to the wonders of natural science, to the enigmatic John Bethune, the treasure seeker, whose quest for Sir John Moore's lost military chest ultimately yielded unexpected riches. Beyond the personal anecdotes, this book offers insights into the social and religious landscape of Scotland during a time of significant change. The author eloquently portrays the rise of the Free Church and the lingering influence of Catholicism, while also providing a glimpse into the lives of the working class and the challenges they faced. Through her charming and insightful narrative, the author reminds us that the "manners of our time" are a product of history, and that understanding the past can shed light on the present.
