Synopsis

Excerpt from Correspondence and Remarks Upon Bancroft's History of the Northern Campaign of 1777: And the Character of Major-Gen. Philip Schuyler

The whole country was astounded. So great had been the confidence in the strength of that post, that the wildest rumors circulated with reference to the cause of this disaster. General Schuyler, as command ing the Department, was suspected, and charges of all kinds were heaped upon him, of varying nature. By some he was accused of treason, by others of coward ice, principally because he was not present when the evacuation occurred. It was asserted that he had ordered the heavy cannon to be removed from the fort and smaller ones to be substituted for them. Absurd rumors were circulated, and believed, that the price for his treason was inclosed in balls shot by the enemy into his lines.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book re-examines the Northern Campaign of 1777 in the American Revolutionary War, focusing on the role of General Philip Schuyler. The author challenges traditional interpretations that have portrayed Schuyler as a flawed and indecisive leader, arguing instead that he played a crucial role in slowing the British advance and ultimately contributing to the American victory. The book explores the complex political and military challenges faced by Schuyler, including the shortage of supplies, the need to coordinate with other generals, and the intense scrutiny he faced from Congress. Through a careful examination of primary sources, the author sheds new light on Schuyler's strengths and weaknesses as a commander and provides a more nuanced understanding of his contributions to the war effort. This book offers a fresh perspective on a pivotal campaign and will appeal to historians and general readers interested in the American Revolution.
