Excerpt from James Sprunt Historical Monograph, Vol. 7: William Richardson Davie: A Memoir, Followed by His Letters With Notes
As in the case of many others of the Revolutionary charac ters of North Carolina, we lack many facts that would b interest and value in regard to the life and ancestry of G eral Davie. At his death he left more of the material fr which history is written than most Southern men, but nea all of this disappeared in the wholesale robbery and de tion that accompanied Sherman's march through South olina. Thus many documents that would throw much li on his early life and that would give a clear idea of his cha acter, are missing.
