Synopsis

Excerpt from Selections From Chaucer's Minor Poems: With Introductions, Notes, and a Glossary

It has of course been necessary to punctuate the text. There is practically no punctuation in the mss. Authorities, and the early printed editions Show little more than an occasional full stop.

In a few instances in which all the authorities seem to be at fault, conjectural readings have been incorporated in the text. A marginal asterisk serves to indicate the lines in which this liberty has been taken, and, in every case, the readings of the original texts are reproduced or referred to in the foot-notes.

As there is no one authority from which all the poems here presented could have been transcribed, and as this book is intended chiefly for college students in India whose acquaintance with older English Literature is, of necessity, but slight, I have deemed it advisable to preserve some degree of uniformity in the spelling throughout.
