This edition presents Frederika Macdonald’s methodical new criticism of Rousseau, arguing that a false reputation was handed down by contemporaries and later embraced by critics. It frames a historical mystery using newly discovered evidence and documentary sources, and it examines how this revised picture reshapes how we read Rousseau’s work today. The work foregrounds the tension between historical method and psychological interpretation, inviting readers to reconsider the link between a thinker’s life and his writings.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book re-examines the life and literary works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, largely regarded as an irredeemably complex and contradictory figure. The author posits that the widespread perception of Rousseau as a hypocrite, liar, and egomaniac is the result of a deliberate campaign of defamation, initiated during his lifetime by the likes of Voltaire, Diderot, and dāAlembert, a conspiracy which aimed to destroy his standing and reputation in the years following his death. By setting the record straight on the historical circumstances surrounding Rousseauās life, this book presents a fresh perspective on his true personality and reveals how various individuals and groups have distorted our understanding of him through historical revisionism. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9781331455530_0
