Synopsis
This book is a record of the author's time in Rome, where he had the opportunity to meet and talk to many members of the priesthood, including a series of conversations with members of the Jesuit Order. The author's conversations with the Jesuits were frank and open, with the Jesuits attempting to answer his objections to Catholicism and to persuade him to join their communion. The author was impressed by the learning, zeal, and moral lives of the Jesuits but was ultimately unconvinced by their arguments. The author observed that the Jesuits were highly disciplined and obedient to their superiors and that this obedience was based on the belief that it was the highest Christian virtue. The book is an interesting and informative account of the beliefs and practices of the Jesuits and provides a unique insight into the inner workings of one of the most powerful religious orders in the world.
