IN submitting these Sketches of Voyages and Travels in the Western Hemisphere to the pub lic, I beg to state the reasons why I under took them, and also to furnish an outline of the route which I followed, in order that the reader may clearly understand the nature of the work which he may think it worth his while to peruse.
