Excerpt from A Treatise on the Art of Politeness, Good Breeding, and Manners, Vol. 1 of 1: With Maxims and Moral Reflections
It will be seen that the maxims in the following pages are written upon this principle - that men are the saw; upon this alone it is, that the sacred maxim which forms the golden hinge of our religion, rests and revolves, do unto thy neighbor as thou wouldst that he should do unto thee. The proverbs of Solomon suit all places and all times, because Solomon knew mankind, and mankind are ever the same. No revolution has taken place 'in the body er in the mind. Four thousand years ago men shivered with frost, and panted with heat, were cold in their gratitude, and ardent in their revenge.
