Excerpt from A Disputation on Holy Scripture: Against the Papists, Especially Bellarmine and Stapleton
IT seemed desirable that this, the great work of one of the greatest of our early divines upon the cardinal point of difference between the churches of the Roman and the reformed communions, should be comprised in the collection of the Parker Society; not only on account of its intrinsic merits, but also for its historical value; as exhibiting the posture of defence assumed by our schools against that change of tactics in the management of this great controversy, which is to be dated from the insti tutien of the Society of Jesus.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the heated religious debates of the 16th century, specifically those surrounding the authority and interpretation of Holy Scripture. The author, a prominent theologian and scholar, meticulously examines the arguments put forth by Catholic proponents, notably the renowned Jesuit Robert Bellarmine. Emerging during a period of intense religious upheaval, the book addresses critical questions about the role of Scripture in shaping faith and guiding Christian life. It explores the number and authenticity of canonical books, the accessibility of biblical texts to the common reader, and the contentious issue of unwritten traditions versus the Bible's self-sufficiency. Through rigorous analysis and engaging prose, the author defends the Protestant position, contending for the Bible's clarity, authority, and ultimate supremacy in matters of faith. This book offers invaluable insights into a pivotal moment in Christian history, illuminating the enduring debate about the foundation of religious belief and the interpretation of sacred texts.
