Excerpt from The Liturgies: 1549 and 1662
This Volume contains the ordinary Daily Office for Holy Communion, according to the Use of the Church of England, reprinted from the First Book of Edward VI., A.D. 1549, and the Sealed Copy of the Liturgy of Charles II., A.D. 1662.
It is published at the present time, because attention has been lately drawn to the earliest vernacular Liturgy of our Church, which has, with much reason, been considered to be the standard of ritual (as distinct from ceremonial) which was deliberately set forth by authority, at the reconstruction of our Offices in the Sixteenth Century: and by instituting a comparison of our present Liturgy with that of the First Book of Edward VI., it is intended to show to what extent the later Office has recovered from the injuries inflicted in 1552, and has once more approximated to the earlier standard, towards which, at each successive revision after the first, it has gradually but surely approached.
This book may also be made the means of showing to how great an extent the Office of 1662 still falls short, both in manner of arrangement, and in some matters of detail, of the Liturgy of 1549; and hence will be suggestive of what further restoration may be required to bring the existing Office into conformity with the earlier one. That these differences are confined to questions of secondary importance, is, of course, assumed throughout the inquiry.
