Excerpt from Swedenborg and His Mission: A Lecture Delivered Before the Massachusetts Association of the New=jerusalem Church, at Its Session in Boston, April 7, 1859
The Christian church, forgetful of the lesson which was then taught, has been looking for the literal accomplishment of the prophecy in regard to the second coming of the Lord, wherein it is foretold that he should come in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Instead of this, he has come as the Divine Truth in his Holy Word. Similar states of mind have led to similar results. The Jews had probably no real belief in a future state, and no higher idea of heaven than of worldly grandeur and prosperity; and, regarding themselves as the Chosen people of God, they expected these from their Messiah.
Christians, too, have been looking for his kingdom in this world; not a spiritual kingdom, in which he would descend into their hearts, and reign there; but an earthly kingdom, in which he would appear in person like a prince, when they should enjoy an inconceivable amount of undefined happiness, arbitrarily bestowed upon them in preference to the rest of mankind. Both the first and the second advent of the Lord have now been accomplished, while Jews and Christians stand waiting for the literal fulfilment of the predictions m regard to him, the one for a temporal deliverer, the other for his visi ble appearance in the clouds of heaven.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the profound theological concept of the Second Coming of Christ as understood within the framework of the New Church. The author posits that this Second Coming is not a literal, physical event but rather a spiritual revelation of the deeper meaning of the Word, as exemplified through the writings and experiences of Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg's unique role and mission are explored, emphasizing his capacity to bridge the spiritual and natural worlds, providing insights into the nature of heaven, hell, and the transformative events of the Last Judgment. The author meticulously examines the theological implications of Swedenborg's experiences, particularly his encounters with angels and spirits, and his crucial role in disseminating the doctrines of the New Church in both the spiritual and earthly realms. The book's exploration extends beyond Swedenborg's individual experiences to encompass the broader theological landscape of the New Church, addressing its core tenets such as the Divine Humanity of Christ and the significance of living a life in accordance with the Ten Commandments. The author skillfully contextualizes these concepts within the historical evolution of Christian thought, highlighting the New Church's distinctive approach to understanding scripture and spiritual growth. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling and insightful examination of the New Church's theology, illuminating the transformative power of Swedenborg's revelations and the profound implications of the Second Coming for humanity's spiritual journey.
