Excerpt from The Insanity of Over-Exertion of the Brain: Being the Morison Lectures Delivered Before the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Session 1894

Since the publication of the following Lectures in the Edinburgh Medical Journal, important investigations have been made, bearing on certain opinions and theories advanced in them. As the results of these investigations have been given to the public only in the form of Lectures or Demonstrations, I deem it advisable not to anticipate their fuller publication. From what has been communicated to me, I feel, however, justified in saying that these researches will throw much light on the nature of cell changes, on the rapidity of subsequent deterioration of the connection-apparatus, and on the absolute necessity of rest for recuperation; and will thus aid us to arrive at a rational system of treatment of the Insanities.

Much honour must accrue to Hodge of the Clark University for initiating a system of experimentation which opens up a novel and important line of enquiry. To have demonstrated that brain cells are, even as other cells are, liable to diurnal physiological waste and restoration, is a matter of deep interest to the physiologist and psychologist. My hearty thanks are due to him for the generous manner in which he placed his preparations at my disposal.
