Synopsis
This book details how bacteria cause pneumonia in pigs. The author suggests that, contrary to common belief, the primary cause of the disease is not the bacterium previously thought to be responsible (B. suisepticus) but may in fact be a different, previously overlooked bacterium (an inulin fermenting streptococcus) or even a combination of the two bacteria. Evidence is presented from a study of 100 apparently healthy pigs and 314 pigs with varying degrees of pneumonia. The author further examines the related inflammatory responses produced by these bacteria. The book provides a significant contribution to our understanding of the causes of pneumonia in pigs and challenges current assumptions about the roles of specific bacteria in the disease.
