Excerpt from Philosophical Magazine, Vol. 30: Comprehending the Various Branches of Science, the Liberal and Fine Arts, Agriculture, Manufactures, and Commerce
This theory is founded upon three principal definitions the first regards certain movements which I call geometrical, because they may be determined by the principle of geome try alone, and are absolutely independent of the rules of dynamics. I have not thought that we could easily pass over them without leaving some obscurity in the elucidation of the principal propositions, as I have particularly shown with respect to the principle of Descartes.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of papers from across 15 years of experiments and theories in the field of musical instrument intonation, particularly focusing on stringed keyboard instruments. The author, an accomplished mathematician and musician, critiques the equal temperament system of tuning, which was gaining popularity at the time, and proposes alternative systems which he argues provide superior results. His theories are supported by meticulous mathematical proofs and clear explanations. The book's historical and scientific context is provided throughout, integrating the author's work into the broader discussion of music theory from antiquity to the present day. Of particular interest to music theorists and mathematicians, this book is essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the art and science of musical temperament.
